About The Unfinished

The black water has been watching and waiting. It needs souls to survive. When Avery’s morning run leads her to it, it wakes the black water up. She can smell and see it everywhere. Now she thinks she’s losing her mind. But then people start to go missing. She’s heard stories of monsters from some of her native american family members, but she’s never connected with those stories because her Mom has kept her away. Now she might just need those very people to help her get through.

What I thought

I picked up The Unfinished because I was having it popped up for me a lot, and it really sounded interesting. So I checked it out from the library.

Maybe I’m just picking out the wrong books because I wound up feeling like the story was really boring. Her having hallucinations was pretty creepy, but that was about it. The story is slow, and honestly I feel like there isn’t a whole lot going on in the story.

Part of the reason I picked this book up was because of the cover. It looks really cool and is ultimately what caught my attention in the first place. But then I read the synopsis, and that solidified the fact that I wanted to read it. I have always been fascinated with other people’s lore, especially Native Americans’ lore. They have always caught my attention, and I’ve always wanted to learn more about them. But I quickly realized that there aren’t many fictional books about them.

Yes, I know fiction books aren’t the way to learn about them, but I do like getting stories about them as well. That’s why I wound up picking up The Unfinished. But the further I got into it, the more I didn’t really like the story. I think it’s just hard for me to wrap my head around evil water that basically eats those who are close to you. Yes, I’m simplifying it, but that’s basically the gist of it.

I do kind of wish that we got more intel on Avery’s friend when he went into the black water. It would have been cool to get his perspective on things, and I do kind of wish we knew he was okay after he got out. I feel like we aren’t given a whole lot of information about much of anything. The story has quite a bit of slow parts to it, and at some point I was just really hoping for it to end.

I found out not long ago that there’s a second book, but I’m not really sure if I care enough to read it and figure out what happens next and to see if her friend wound up being okay.
