Are You Afraid of the Dark? The Tale of the Gravemother follows a new family who just found out that they have ancestors they never knew about who lived here. At least they didn’t know about them until they were left with their ancestors’ home when the deed was found in the walls. For the time being, they live in an apartment until they decide if they want to stay and fix the house up or move, since they have no attachment to the home. Like in most small towns, rumors get around fast, and they are made well aware that the house is haunted. They don’t believe it at first. At least not until the two kids start to see things.
What I thought
I have mixed feelings about this. Are You Afraid of the Dark? It’s written really well, so don’t get me wrong about that. There’s just nothing new about it, and on top of that, it is really cheesy and basic. I know its based off of a ’90s show that was pretty cheesy in itself, but it always had so much potential to be amazing and really creepy. So I feel like if these books are done right, then they can bring forth that true creepiness.
The brothers’ and sisters’ relationship doesn’t seem typical and almost seems unrealistic to me, but maybe that has a lot to do with my relationship with my brothers and how I didn’t really have the best relationship with them. So maybe that’s just a me thing.
However, this book is pretty interesting, and it does, in a way, make me wonder about the afterlife a bit. Mostly on if its real or not, and if it is real, are ghosts going to be like the one in this? It also makes me a bit interested in history and the past. Part of me wants to see how people lived and what exactly would make them want to stay here, because I definitely would not want to stay here any longer than I have to.
