About Needy Little Things

Needy Little Things is about a teenage black girl who has a special ability. She can hear the needs of people around her, except those who are close to her. When she and her friends go to a festival that she didn’t even want to go to, one of her friends disappears. This brings up so many bad memories of another one of her best friends disappearing. But this time, she wants the outcome to be different. She doesn’t want any more of her friends to become another forgotten black girl. Will she be able to find out what happened to her friend?

What I thought

I managed to get an advanced copy of Needy Little Things a while back. I’m so glad that I managed to get this one. I wasn’t completely sure how I would feel about this one. Lately, I have noticed that YA books have been hit or miss for me.

Needy Little Things was not one of those books. It caught my attention from the very beginning. That’s mostly because I feel like the story had a slow start. If I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t sure if this was going to be one that I was going to finish. I feel like hearing other people’s needs is a unique ability that I haven’t come across before. I think this “psychic” ability really brings a uniqueness to all of this and brings it to a whole new level.

All of the characters are fleshed out and seem realistic. It seems like a lot of books now really struggle with fleshing out characters and not making them so stiff. I like that we also get a character who has a mental illness that’s a little on the severe side.

The plot is great, too. It’s a very fast-paced book, even though it didn’t start that way. Throughout the book, you can’t help but root for the characters. I do have to say that the ending of the book caught me by surprise. With how it ended, I hope there’s going to be another book so we can get answers on what happened. Loved, loved, loved this book.
