About We Are Okay
All of our lives we think there’s so much that we need. That is until you leave with only your phone, wallet, and a picture of your mom. Ever since she left, Marin hasn’t spoken to anyone from her old life because she left everything behind. No one truly knows about those last days. Not even her best friend, Mabel. Months later, she’s alone in her dorm over winter break. But Mabel decides to come and visit, and it forces Marin to face what she’s been running from. Now she’s forced to face the loneliness and the things she hasn’t spoken about.
What I thought
I picked up this book because of the cover. It’s a very pretty cover. Secondly, I love contemporary novels as long as they are done right and are interesting.
Marin has maybe a little bit of character growth. I found her story equally parts interesting and boring. It’s not interesting reading about a person who shuts herself away.
The pacing of We Are Okay is actually really slow. I love a good contemporary novel, but if it’s written well. I honestly got pretty bored with this one.
I like the concept of We Are Okay, but because the pacing was slow, it made it hard for me to really show much interest in the plot of it.
Maybe it’s because I have been sad for a while now that made it hard for me. I don’t want to read about a girl who stays sad and doesn’t actively work on getting out of it. So, maybe this is the wrong time for me to read it. On top of that, nothing really interesting happens in the story for me. Maybe if you like a story with a lot of talking and a lot of reflecting but not much else, then this story is for you. For me this story is probably a 3 out of 5 stars. I wouldn’t say that it’s a terrible book, but it wasn’t for me. I know that it’s for someone out there, though, and maybe just maybe it will help them out more than it did me.
However, I do have to say that I wound up really liking how the book ended. I’m glad that Marin has someone who actually cares for her.
