9 Dark Academia Books for back to school thrills

Where I live in the United States, some schools have already started. Others start later, but where I’m at, they usually start at the beginning of August. It’s early, I know, but we’re used to it here. It’s normal, and now I don’t think anything about it. But with school starting here now, that means it’s time to find some great books that revolve around school itself. So, that means some great dark academia books!

So what exactly does dark academia mean? After looking it up the dark academia meaning is actually vague. But for me, dark academia is usually books that take place in private or prep school. It usually follows the “elite” kids, and obviously, something dark happens and secrets are exposed. There are some exceptions to this where it doesn’t completely take place in a private school. But it usually follows students who have something dark hidden, and it gets found out and exposed.

But here are some great dark academia books that you should add to your TBR!

Best Summer Reads for 2025

We’re in the thick of summer break, and summer hasn’t even really started yet at the point I’m typing all of this out. It’s crazy to me that summer hasn’t even started yet (Like I said at the point I’m writing this. By the time this comes out, it will be “summer”). That’s mostly because I live in the south in the United States, and it gets very hot and humid here. So in reality, I already feel like summer is here. Plus, hurricane season here has started, and I’m so not looking forward to that. So, whether you’re trying to beat the heat or trying to avoid bad weather, here are some of the best summer reads for a good distraction!

What makes a book one of the best to you? What boxes do you need to tick off when you consider the best summer reads? I know a lot of you will probably say romance. They have to have romance. If that’s the case, then these books are probably not going to be on your best summer reads.
