About Secrets Never Die
Sam and his friends bury their secrets in a place called the Dark Place. One of his friends throws a Halloween party, and they sneak off to bury their secrets. Sam used to be a child star until it went up in flames. No one knows why. Not even his best friend. But he and his friends each have a secret that pertains to that night his house went into flames. That is, until someone starts blackmailing them.
What I thought
I have conflicting feelings about Secrets Never Die. But first, let me talk about why I picked this book up. The cover is what drew me in first. I don’t know what it is about thriller covers that always grabs my attention, but they do. Plus, if they are designed right, I have a hard time passing it up. Plus, the synopsis grabbed my attention as well. Books like this always remind me of a variation of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
So, the positives. The story is pretty fast-paced. At least it is for me. There’s not a whole lot of downtime or dull moments. I also like the characters. I haven’t read many books that have the perspective of child stars, so to me, that puts a unique twist. I enjoyed some of the twists and turns, too.
Now the negatives. I think part of me expected their secrets to be juicier. There’s one secret that I understood, but the others, I was pretty much thinking, that’s it? Then there’s the bad guy. To me, that was a bit of a letdown. It is by no means anyone that you would be expecting, and it comes out of nowhere. That was a disappointment to me. I guess I more or less like the hidden in plain sight type of thing. I tend to lean towards books where the bad guy is close to the main character in some way.
Overall, this book is just okay. It will not stand out to me, and I’ll probably forget about it within the next month or so. I hate that it’s that way because I love books that I’m fully able to invest in.
