About School for Spirits

School for Spirits is about Laigh. She’s three weeks away from graduation when she’s hit and killed. She thought she had no more school, but now that she’s in heaven, she still has to go and take classes. Now she has to work to become a spirit guide. This is where she meets Alyx, her roommate, who doesn’t care about anything. When she’s assigned her instructor, she starts to learn some new things. She falls for an Archangel, and she’s determined to loosen her instructor up.

What I thought

So, I don’t remember when exactly I bought this book, but I must not have realized that this was a full-on romance book. This just goes to show that I really need to start paying attention to what the book is actually about rather than just paying attention to the cover.

The premise of this story sounds really good, and I figured I would love the idea of it. But the whole story to me is written pretty poorly. The love story reads like it’s written as a middle schooler’s love story rather than a high schooler’s.

I feel as if every single character in this story is emotionally immature. Even the ones that have been there for thousands of years. So, all of this story and how it went down ultimately pissed me off.

Leigh overall just seemed emotionally immature for your typical 17-year-old. When she got up to heaven, it seemed like she didn’t have much of a grieving process. She had some sad moments, but that’s about it. It’s like she got up to heaven and didn’t care all that much anymore that she’s not alive and can’t live with her family anymore.

I wish this story were so much more than it was. I wish the story had more meaning and feeling behind all of it, too. To me, this is just a story of a girl who doesn’t care that she died and is now thrown into a love triangle.
