It’s the end of January, have you stuck with your goals or have you given up already? This is usually about the time that people start to give up because they are unrealistic or they just lose hope. What is it about January that sets us up on a high note to write down as many goals as we can and try to accomplish them all? That’s how it’s always been for me anyway. So how do you stick to your goals?

This is going to be our year. We’re going to accomplish so much! So how do we do that if we’re actually struggling to stick to our goals and habits?

How to stick to your goals

Setting goals that actually work (how to stick to your goals)

I feel like so many people set goals that they don’t really care about. We see so many people writing so many of the same goals, and it’s turning us all into the same people. I’m not saying that if you are writing down a lot of the same goals other people are, then you don’t care about them. I get it, there are going to be quite a few goals that wind up overlapping. Especially considering that there are a ton of people who put down to lose weight at the beginning of the year. All I’m saying is that you shouldn’t write it down just for the sake of writing it down.

As you will see all over the internet, the best way to stick to your goals is by setting smart goals. These are goals that you can break down into smaller ones so that they can be accomplished easier. Just write down a couple that are most important to you, and let that be the focus for you for the first quarter of the year. This will make things a lot more manageable for you.

How to set goals realistically

I think this is one problem that a lot of people don’t do right. So, many people are setting goals that are completely unrealistic and unattainable like setting a goal to lose one hundred pounds in a year. Granted that something that’s not completely unattainable depending on how big the person is, but so many people write goals like this down. The issue is that people don’t see results and then give up. It’s an instant gratification that I think more and more people are starting to obtain. This includes me.

That is nearly impossible to have when setting goals and trying to accomplish them. Maybe we all should start working on our mindsets so we’re going into the new year not expecting to accomplish everything all at once. If we’re able to get to this point, then maybe we can start being realistic with how we set our goals and what we plan to accomplish within a year.

The easiest way to do this now, though, is by sitting down and really thinking about what you want to accomplish. If losing weight is one of your goals,s then maybe think of a set amount you want to lose then how much you have to lose per month to accomplish it by the month you want to accomplish it by. This would be a clear indicator of if you’re expectations are too high because there is no way you can lose fifteen pounds in a month healthily.

Staying on track with goals

Staying on track with your goals is the big one. There are a lot of times when we don’t see any results and then just give up instead of getting back up and trying again. It sucks that we do this because all of us have potential. Yes, I mean you too.

A great way to kind of combat this sort of thing is to have weekly reflections. I understand that not many people are going to want to do this, and that’s fine. But for those of you who are on Notion or if you even like to journal, doing weekly reflections helps out a lot. There are a bunch of websites out there that give you prompts to write about, so you aren’t just rambling on the page. This can help you get clear and concise about what you truly want. It’ll also help you see your progress as well.

Even though yes, we may not see our progress outwardly, but when we sit down and talk about it, or in this case, write about it, it allows us to open up and really see what we have done so far. As long as you’ve broken things down into smaller manageble task, this will allow you to see that.

There are ways that you can turn your goals into a game as well. I know there are a bunch of you who probably need something like this in order for your goals to actually stay interesting. I get it, and I kind of feel the same way. But if this sounds like you, then do some research on how you can turn things into a game and make your goals two times more fun.

How to set goals that really matter

This is why reflection really matters. Thinking about the past year and all of the ways that you wish you had done differently. This is typically where I freeze up a lot. I think about the past and all of the things I wish I would have done to change thing. That’s when I ultimately freeze because I feel like it’s too late. If you get this way, then let me know in the comments. Maybe I can work on a post on how we all can work on this and make our brains realize that we have so much time left.

Conclusion on how to stick to your goals

Sticking to your goals shouldn’t be hard. It shouldn’t be frustrating, and you shouldn’t want to give up on them. It’s okay to give up if it’s ultimately not working for you or if you decide that you actually don’t really like it all that much. But if it’s something you’re thinking about day in and day out, then stick to that shit!

You truly deserve happiness. Anyone who tells you otherwise (including yourself) can just go away. This year is going to be the year of trial and error, where you’re going to figure out what actually works for you. Don’t be afraid to start over because it’s better to start over now when you have time and not regret it when you’re on your deathbed. Starting over is not a sign of failure. In reality, it’s a sign of growth.
