Dark Fairy Tales you HAVE to add to your TBR
Growing up I always loved fairy tales. They took you to a different world and I loved that about them. I don’t think that will ever change. Now that I’m older I kind of want something darker and not so happy through the entire book. Hence why I’m creating this post on dark fairy tales. I just hope you guys feel the same way!
They started dark and I think a lot of people are going back to the darkness of them. I love that because I would love to get into them more and talk to others about them.
In this post you will find a mixture of books for different audiences but I did make sure to include some dark fairy tales for adults. Depending on what you’re looking for just make sure to check the age range for it.
Let me know in the comments what some of your favorite Dark Fairy Tales are!
Dark Fairy Tales
Every so often I’ll come back to this post and update it so you can find more Fairy Tale retailing that you may like. With that being said, make sure to bookmark this post or sign up for our newsletter so you can stay up to date with it!
A Tale Dark and Grimm
I love stories like this. The concept that characters can just walk out of their story and go somewhere else is such a fun thing to add to a book.
The fact that this has dark aspects to it makes it so much better! This is a story that is aimed towards younger audiences but if you’re okay with that then I would check it out and see if it’s one that you enjoy!
Here is what A Tale Dark and Grimm is about.
A Tale Dark and Grimm follows Hansel and Gretel as they walk out of their own story. Instead, they walk into other classic Grimm stories. As we follow them through a scary forest, we learn the truth about the breadcrumbs, edible houses, and witches.

Sisters Red
Sisters Red is one of those dark fairy tales that I really want to check out.
Once I’m able to get caught up with my backlogged books I’m definitely going to be checking this one out.
Here is what Sisters Red is about.
Scarlett is an expert in luring and slaying wolves. Since the wolves like to attack them she is determined to protect herself and the other young girls. Her rage isn’t going to let her rest until all of the wolves are dead.
Rosie once thought that her bond with her sister, Scarlett, was unbreakable. She owes Scarlett her life and she hunts alongside her. As more girl’s bodies start to pile up she finds herself drawn to someone else. But loving him will mean betraying her sister and all they worked for.

A Curse so Dark and Lonely
A Curse so Dark and Lonely is one of those dark fairy tales that I have been meaning to read for a while now. When it first came out I was seeing it all over Instagram but I never got around to getting it.
Here is what A Curse so Dark and Lonely is about.
Prince Rhen was cursed by a powerful enchantress. He thought he could be easily saved if a girl just fell for him. Unfortunately, that was before he was turned into a beast and destroyed his castle.
Harper has always had a hard life. Her father is gone, her mother died, and her brother always underestimates her. It doesn’t help that she has cerebral palsy. She had to learn to be tough. But when she tries to save someone on the streets she is pulled into a magical world.
She doesn’t know where she is and she has all of this information dumped on her. As she spends time with Rhen she realizes what is at stake and he soon realizes that Harper isn’t just another girl to charm.

Thorn Hedge
I think Thorn Hedge is the only one on this list that I don’t have a lot of interest in but I know a lot of you might.
Despite that I still may check this one out eventually since I know T. Kingfisher is a really good author!
Here is what Thorn Hedge is about.
Toadling was stolen on the day of her birth by the fairies. The good thing is that she grew up safe and loved. But when she’s an adult a fae asks her to return to the human world and protect a newborn child. Should be simple right?
Nothing is ever simple with the fairies.
Centuries later a knight wants to break a curse that he has heard needs breaking. But Toad will do anything to uphold that curse.

House of Hollow
House of Hollow is one that I bought a while back but like I said I have so many backlogged books that I just haven’t had the chance to get to many of the books I have.
This is one I’m going to have to get to soon!
Here is what House of Hollow is about.
Iris and her sisters have always been strange. When they were younger something happened to them that they can’t quite remember. It ultimately left them with a half-moon scar on their throats.
Growing up Iris has spent most of that time trying to avoid the weirdness and to blend in. When her oldest sister goes missing she learns exactly how weird her life can get. Men start shadowing her, a dead body falls out of her sister’s ceiling, and she starts remembering weird memories from her past.
As Iris tries to follow her sister’s breadcrumbs she soon realizes that the only way she can figure out what happened to her is by uncovering what happened to them as kids.
The closer she gets the more she starts to realize how dark and dangerous things are.

Allison’s Adventures in Under Land
I’m really glad that I decided to do this post because I’m finding books that I never heard of before. Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorites and I love reading books that revolve around it.
I will be adding this to my TBR when I get the chance!
Here is what Allison’s Adventures in Underland is about.
This is a unique telling of Allison in Wonderland but this isn’t Wonderland. She fell into a rabbit hole but everything else is different.
This isn’t Wonderland this is Underland and there’s a huge difference.
Violence, sex, and drugs are all here unlike Wonderland.
Can you help Allison get out of here?

Alice
I’m actually kind of surprised that I haven’t checked this book out before now. If you have read this one then let me know what you thought about it in the comments!
Here is what Alice is about.
In Old City there are crumbling buildings and the people are desperate. There’s also a hospital with cinderblock walls that echo the screams of the souls inside.
Stuck in the hospital is a woman whose hair was once blond. She doesn’t know why she’s there or what she had done. All she remembers is a tea party a long time ago with someone with long ears and blood.
One night a fire goes off in the hospital giving her the chance to escape and figure out what happened those years ago.
The only thing is that something escaped with her. It’s something dark and something powerful.
In order to find out the truth, she has to track the breast to the heart of Old City where the rabbit waits for his Alice.
